Temple of Heaven
3D Modeling
Software: Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, Substance Painter
2023
For this project, I recreated the "Temple of Heaven," a real-world object located in Beijing, China, and then incorporated it into a surreal environment on the mountaintop using Maya.
The project started by collecting reference photos and blueprints of the "Temple of Heaven," which was then used to model the building's exterior structure in Maya accurately. I paid special attention to the details, including the roofs, stone carvings, and mural decorations, to match the unique Chinese architecture of the original building.
Then, I decided to move the entire building onto the top of a mountain and create a natural environment around it. The environment was designed to make the space feel surreal and otherworldly. I incorporated elements like urban buildings, trees, shadows, and blue sky. I also used the Unreal Engine's particle system to create moving clouds and mist around the temple, giving the scene some realism.
After finalizing the main models, I worked on the tree top canopy by using instance mash instead of modeling every single leaf, which helped save the render time and create a unique atmosphere for this surreal environment.
This is my first hard surface modeling project, showcasing my ability to accurately create objects in 3D modeling software using Maya and other supporting software such as Zbrush and Substance Painter. The learning process was tough but, at the same time, very fulfilling. I am glad I went through this process and am very proud and happy with the result.
